Memories and questions on the Space Operas of 1950s Radio ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Memory 1:
In the 1950s in Queensland, at 6:00pm on 4BC, a voice declaimed (if memory serves) "From the whispering sands of Venus to the minarets of Mars, from the storm-lashed icebergs of Jupiter to the bitter coldness of Pluto, and to the planets beyond, go Captain Video and the (dramatic pause, then in a deep resonant voice) SPACE PATROL.
Once, it even advertised that you could buy a space helmet and my mother bought one for me. I failed to hid my disappointment when it turned out to be made of cardboard, rather than the glass I had naively expected. However, it did include an eyepiece made of smoky plastic film, where you could see out but my friends couldn't see in. All gone now (along with my expensive leather Hopalong Cassidy suit) in one of the periodic clean-outs of the garage when I wasn't there to rescue the memories.
Associated Questions 1a, 1b 1c: 1a: Was this Australian, or was it American? 1b: Do any episodes survive? 1c: If episodes survive, where does one go to obtain any?
Memory 2:
Following at 6:15 pm on 4BC, was "Speed King, King of Space". I remember one episode when the goodies planned to penetrate the force field over an enemy base or city, by using ancient bombs. The baddies however captured one of the goodies and hypnotised him into revealing the plans, at which point the chief baddie was impressed by the lateral thinking involved.
Associated Questions 2a, 2b, 2c: 2a: A South African website believes that it was Australian SF. Was it? 2b: Do any episodes survive? 2c: If episodes survive, where does one go to obtain any?
Memory 3:
At one time, "Speed King, King of Space" was replaced by "The Nth Planet". In one episode, the space station was burning in space and I wondered where the oxygen was coming from to feed the fire. I haven't come across any references to this programme.
Associated Questions 3a, 3b, 3c: 3a: Was it an Australian, US or a UK programme? 3b: Do any episodes survive? 3c: If episodes survive, where does one go to obtain any?
Memory 4: At 5pm on 4BK, you could listen to "Rocky Starr". However, we very rarely heard it, because all the kids were out playing together until our parents called us home for tea just before 5:45 pm (when Hop Harrigan, or The Air Adventures of Biggles, or Captain Silver of the "Seahound" came on).
Associated Questions 4a, 4b, 4c: 4a: I believe it was Australian. Was it? 4b: Do any episodes survive? 4c: If episodes survive, where does one go to obtain any?

I could see she was thinking. ¡°Mom,¡± she said in a quiet wow goldvoice, ¡°I love you more than myself.¡±I stopped. Dumbfounded2. Overwhelmed by her sincerity. Here I thought I knew more than she did. I thought I knew at least everything that she knew. However, my four-year-old daughter knows more about love than her 28-year-old mom.
